It’s that time again: Like every year, Samsung is presenting new (folding) smartphones and tablets at the “Unpacked” event. This time the motto is “Join the flip side”. The Galaxy S9 tablets and two new tablets were shown: Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5.This time the big Unpacked event took place in the Korean capital Seoul, a home game for Samsung.
Samsung Tab S9, S9+ and S9 UltraThe entire Tab S9 series comes with Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1, but the next version of One UI is currently in the works.All three models work with Wi-Fi 6E and connect to all sorts of accessories using the latest Bluetooth 5.3. Optionally there are again devices with 5G and LTE. The built-in USB-C port for charging uses USB 3.2. The powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (for Galaxy), which is already used in the Samsung Galaxy S23, works inside. There are differences in the display, the cameras, the battery and the storage equipment.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a consistent development of the last model, but not a real “revolution”.
The external display measures 6.2 inches and the large internal display measures 7.6 inches. Technically they are the same as last year, but the internal display is a bit brighter at 1,200 cd/m² and a full 1,750 cd/m² for HDR playback.
The already very good hinge has been revised this time and now allows the inner display to fold flat. Gone is the wedge shape. It has also become a little more compact (67.1 × 154.9 × 13.4 mm) and lighter (253 g).
The camera setup is also identical to the previous model. Thanks to the better processor, the images should look slightly nicer.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy with 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM now works inside. Storage space (UFS 4.0) is again available in three versions: 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB.
The price, however, has increased slightly: 1,899 euros for 256 GB, 2,019 euros for 512 GB and 2,259 euros for 1 TB. You can choose from Phantom Black, Cream and Icy Blue, while Samsung also offers gray and blue.Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
The popular Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is getting a larger and therefore more practical external display this year. From 1.9 inches it goes straight to 3.4 inches. However, the OLED panel with 720 × 748 pixels at 60 Hz cannot be used as freely as its competitor Motorola. Here the selection of apps and functions is highly tailored. However, there is an experimental mode in the options to be able to use more apps on the external display.
A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy with 8 GB of LPDDR5X RAM now also works inside. The storage options are 256 GB and 512 GB. As a small update, there is now also Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and the battery has grown by 400 mAh to an impressive 3,700 mAh.
Otherwise – including the cameras – nothing or only little has changed compared to its predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic
In addition to the tablets and smartphones, the latest version of the Galaxy Watch was also presented. The sixth generation appears in two versions: “Normal” and “Classic”. The latter offers a rotating bezel.
The normal version is available in 40 and 44 mm, each with a 1.3 or 1.5 inch display. The Classic has 43 and 47 mm, and the displays are also 1.3 or 1.5 inches. The display is protected from scratches by a sapphire crystal and the display edges have been shrunk.The watch is operated by gestures on the edges of the display, in the normal version by a digital bezel and in the classic version by a real physical bezel. But this isn’t entirely new; Galaxy Watches had something like this before. In the fifth generation, however, the rotating bezel took a break.
An Exynos W930 now works as a processor inside, which – according to Samsung – should offer up to 18 percent more performance. It should also use less energy. In addition to the processor, there is 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. The battery has also been slightly improved and is now 300 mAh or 425 mAh. This means that the watch should last a lot longer than its predecessor.On the bottom there is a “Samsung BioActive Sensor” that can measure heart rate, electrical heart signal and bioelectrical impedance analysis. He also masters temperature measurements, acceleration measurements, barometers, gyroscopes, geomagnetic and light measurements. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic also has a 3D Hall sensor.
In a classic way, the watch can monitor your sleep and your sports. These features were already pretty strong in its predecessors. There are now five personalized heart rate zones for analyzing physical performance.The “HR Alert”, which is intended to indicate and alert people when heart rates are particularly high or low, is currently still being developed or certified. This alarm complements the ECG and blood pressure measurement. In addition, the menstrual cycle should also be monitored via the skin temperature and the surface temperatures of various things (metal, wood, plastic, etc.) should be measured.
There is also a small change to the accessories and the bracelets: a new one-click mechanism is intended to retract the pins of the bracelets and thus make the process easier. Older bands, such as the 5th generation, continue to work.The normal Galaxy Watch 6 is available for 319.00 euros (40mm) and 349.00 euros (44mm).
