WD personal cloud and NAS
Western Digital offers various memory products under the WD brand. In addition to hard disks and solid-state drives, these also include so-called network storage, or NAS for short. My Cloud products provide a central location to store content, which can then be accessed wirelessly from anywhere. The My Cloud Home and My Cloud Home Duo series are basically already equipped with hard drives and you get an out-of-the-box NAS. The My Cloud Expert series is also available as an empty enclosure if you want to install special hard drives there. Here, however, the compatibility should be checked in advance.

The My Cloud Home have a capacity between 2 TB and 20 TB. All models, except for the one with 20 TB, have a hard drive with the corresponding storage capacity. Here, Western Digital uses internal WD Red memory from its own ranks. This has been specially developed and tested for NAS. The My Cloud Home is small and weighs just about 1 kg (depending on capacity). With its simple white and silver design, it fits well into the modern living space. Unlike ordinary NAS, this is a simple solution for storing your data centrally.
My Cloud Home Duo – double secured in mirror mode
As the name of the My Cloud Duo suggests, there are two hard drives that can be used individually if desired, but unlike the My Cloud Home, they can also be used in combination. In the so-called mirror mode, also known as RAID 1, the contents of one hard drive are automatically duplicated on the other. The content is doubly secured. If you prefer to use the entire storage space, you can also turn the mode off. With the My Cloud Home Duo you have between 4 TB and 16 TB available. Compared to the My Cloud Home, the Duo is slightly wider and shows the classic NAS look. Here too, the base is silver and the upper part is white.
What functions does the My Cloud Home have?
The cloud storage is simply connected to your Wi-Fi router and set up with your smartphone. The external storage offers plenty of space for photos, videos and files. With the My Cloud Home mobile app, you can access your content on the go with your smartphone without blocking your phone’s storage space. There is also a desktop application and the ability to access your files via MyCloud.com. The content can be streamed to different devices and a search function can be used to easily search for specific files.
My Cloud Home can perform automatic backups for PCs or download and back up data from other cloud accounts. You can set up different storage spaces for users in your family. Everyone can manage their personal content with their own account and you can share files with each other. Password protection is also possible.
My Cloud Expert EX2 Ultra – High-performance network storage (NAS)
If you’re looking for a little more options than simple data storage, you can turn to the My Cloud Expert Series. The EX2 Ultra NAS, which is available both as an empty enclosure and with up to 28 TB of preconfigured WD Red hard drives, can be customized with different RAID options depending on your needs. In addition to the common RAID 1 option, RAID 0 can provide more performance or a JBOD can be used for further configurations without RAID.
My Cloud Expert EX2 Ultra runs My Cloud OS 3 from WD. The robust software offers various tools and apps that optimize data management. These include special folders, automatic synchronization or easy exchange with Dropbox or Google Drive. You decide who gets access to files and folders. You can show content with a public link. Private links can restrict access for certain users.
For streaming content, the NAS is powered by a powerful 1.3 GHz dual-core processor from Marvel and, together with 1 GB of RAM, ensures fast multitasking and fast transfer speeds.
